Thirteen Scenic Byways of the Adirondack North Country

The Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways in the State of New York offers a unique experience for everyone. The area stretches from Lake Ontario to the west, to Lake Champlain to the east and the Mohawk River in the south of the Canadian border to the north. Clayton is home to some of the most unique museums: the Antique Boat Museum and The Handweaving Museum & Arts Center. Watertown welcomes visitors to the Jefferson County Historical Museum, the Thompson Park Conservancy, the Sci-Tech Center, and nearby Fort Drum. Salmon River, famous for its salmon and steelhead fishing can be found in Pulaski. Explore the Great Salmon Wilderness at the southern entrance to the Tug Hill Region. Oswego offers a tour of the Erie Canal, Fort Lake Ontario, and the Derby Hill Bird Observatory. More than 200,000 spectators come out to enjoy the awesome fireworks display at Harborfest each year.

13. Southern Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway: This 112-mile trail along routes 8 and 28 winds northeast through the Adirondacks, circling Pisceo Lake, then continues through Lake Pleasant to Speculator. At Salisbury Center, the Covered Bridge is the only original covered bridge in Herkimer County. Built in 1875, it is still in use today. Nineteen structures, including the Hamilton County Courthouse Complex in Lake Pleasant, are on the National Register and can be found along the Southern Adirondack Trail.
