The bridge collapsed into Puget Sound a little over four months after it opened. During its construction engineers tried to reduce the motion of the bridge, which was caused by the stiff winds in Puget Sound but failed to gain enough control over the instability. The bridge collapsed on November 7, 1940. Miraculously, there was no loss of human life a but cocker spaniel, named Tubby, was lost along with the car he was in.
