Minneapolis Bridge Collapse Aerial Views

The Interstate 35W Mississippi River eight-lane bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has collapsed on both sides of the highway over the Mississippi River during rush hour. The entire length of the bridge over the river collapsed at 6:05 pm CDT (UTC-5). The bridge, built in 1967, cleared the water level by 64 feet; the deck surface and pavement were considerably higher. In 2001 a stress inspection was done and Minnesota Department of Transportation stated that the bridge "should not have any problems with fatigue cracking in the foreseeable future." Typically an eight-lane bridge, the bridge was reduced to four lanes (two in each direction) during the current construction. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) had just announced overnight lane reductions on the bridge to one lane in each direction for the late evening hours of July 31 and August 1.

The bridge collapsed into Puget Sound a little over four months after it opened. During its construction engineers tried to reduce the motion of the bridge, which was caused by the stiff winds in Puget Sound but failed to gain enough control over the instability. The bridge collapsed on November 7, 1940. Miraculously, there was no loss of human life a but cocker spaniel, named Tubby, was lost along with the car he was in. Minneapolis I-35W Bridge Collapse

The I-35W bridge which links the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota collapsed during the evening rush hour. At least 50 vehicles are believed to have plunged into the Mississippi river below. At least a 7 people were reported killed with dozens more injured. About 100000 cars a day travel over the bridge, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Witnesses reported hearing a massive rumble followed by massive clouds of dust and debris. The Deaprtment of Homeland Security have indicated terrorism did not play a role in the disaster. The bridge was 8 lanes wide and was 1907 feet in length. The bridge itself was under construction for road repairs. At least 20-30 people are reported missing. The Minnesota Twins baseball team have canceled their game against the Kansas City Royals for August 2.
