Construction of Hoover Dam, 1933-1935

Originally called Boulder Dam, the Hoover Dam straddles the border of Arizona and Nevada. Construction began in 1933 and was completed two years later. Built with 3.2 million cubic yards of concrete, the dam is some 726 feet high, ranking 20th in the world for height. From 1939 to 1949 it was the worlds largest producer of hydroelectric power; today the dam generates some 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam, covers 247 square miles and is a major recreation area. Construction footage of the building of Hoover Dam. Driving over the Hoover Dam - US 93 Arizona to Nevada

Driving from the Arizona side of the Hoover (Boulder) Dam to Nevada. Showing some of the new bridge construction, which presumably when completed they will stop vehicles over the dam altogether. Hoover Dam, also known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete gravity-arch dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Arizona and Nevada. The dam, located 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, is named after Herbert Hoover, who played an instrumental role in its construction, first as Secretary of Commerce and then later as President of the United States. Construction began in 1931 and was completed in 1935, more than two years ahead of schedule. The dam and the power plant are operated by the Bureau of Reclamation of the US Department of the Interior. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, Hoover Dam was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985. Lake Mead is the reservoir created behind the dam, named after Elwood Mead, who oversaw the construction of the dam.

The Colorado River Bridge is the central portion of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project. Construction on the nearly 2000 foot long bridge began in late January 2005 and the completion of the entire Hoover Dam Bypass Project is expected in June 2010.**
